I’ve never been a fan of the gym and I hadn’t been able to stick at any other classes in the past, but I knew that I needed to do something to increase my fitness levels (which were next to none) and fight off some of the ever increasing inches on my hips! I was nervous going to my first session as I wasn’t sure how I would keep up. I needn’t have worried though, Mandy walked all the newbies through the basic moves and gave clear instructions throughout all the tracks.

With the music turned up and the relatively simple routines I quickly got into the rhythm, and my god did I feel the benefit! By the end of the first class I was hooked, never have I worked so hard and enjoyed myself so much in a class – I walked out with the biggest grin on my face with the sweat literally dripping. Thank God it was raining outside! With different routines being introduced it’s impossible to get bored, although I swear they’re trying to kill me with the Crab track! I became depressed, had a low self-esteem and the confidence that I once had disappeared – I’d lost the old me.

After seeing photos of myself at my sister’s wedding, I knew that I had to start doing something about my weight gain. My size 16 clothes were getting too tight and I didn’t feel good about myself. I tried dieting, going to the gym and doing various fitness classes but never really managed to stick to them and got bored easily. Then in winter 2013, a few friends asked if I wanted to attend a fitness class called Fight Fit Combat Fitness.

I had heard about it before but thought it was just going to be another one of those fitness classes where I went a few times then gave up on it. With much apprehension, I agreed to go and give it a try.The class was easy to follow and I felt completely at ease with the other members around me. The instructors were welcoming, supportive and friendly.

After my first class I was completely knackered but I felt motivated and loved every minute of it – I wanted more! I started off attending one class a week and quickly picked up the routines. One year on and I can proudly say I am a complete Fight Fit Combat Fitness addict! I do two and sometimes three classes a week now. By attending Fight Fit Combat Fitness classes and having a lower calorie diet I have managed to lose just over three stones and have recently been able to buy myself size 12 clothes for the first time in over five years!

But the class time fit perfect for me and I conceded that I REALLY needed to try and do something for my upper body!

Well, I went along to my first class and by the second track I was hooked and willing my back to see me through as I was buzzing! Okay, so I didn’t get all the moves right first time, but they are easy to pick up quickly. And I nearly choked the first time the words “sit-up” and “plank” were mentioned! But I did what I could. This is the beauty of this class – it’s for anyone. No one cares how high you kick, how low you squat or how many crunches you can do without going beetroot! Your only competition is yourself. The atmosphere of the class and the instructors’ enthusiasm is infectious and you can’t help but throw yourself into it along with everyone else.

So, what have I gained in these last few months? Improved strength in my back and core that are beyond anything I could have hoped for. (After the months of physio didn’t help, I had resigned myself to a lifetime of suffering!) Improved muscle tone and increased flexibility. An added bonus is that I have dropped a dress size and lost over half a stone.
